tell me what you love

and i'll tell you who you are

Tony Wood:true love

This Wednesday we’re examing the art of true love. We’ll see some real life examples of true love.  Not sexual, erotic, or romantic love but true heroic, honorable, sacrificial love. Exemplified first on the cross from Jesus to us but then passed from each of us to those around us. It will be one of the most expressive and loving nights in our two year history.

This morning across campus I saw so many people walking around with surgical masks covering their faces. Penned across these masks were the simple words “for Nicole”. I love that they loved. But, do I love as they?

I’m fearful in Southern CA we only see the surface. Little metal boxes that drive past each other on freeways; like animals in small cages. Millions of people and we never really get past “how are you” and “fine”. What does it mean to look below the surface? To really sympathize and pity someone’s pain or circumstance?

This morning I casually walked by one mom who is undergoing intensive chemotherapy. I then laughed for one minute with a guy who is returning to church after 16 years. I shared 3 minutes with a dude who’s mom was being baptized after 17 years of estrangement. It’s hard to get below the surface.

Getting below the surface takes work. True love does work. See you in three days!
