I speak Shakespeare.
Don’t make fun of me!!
Most people will argue that as King Lear progresses, the king loses his sanity. I have to argue differently.
Back up for a second…the higher up the food chain you go, the less it is about you. His responsibility as king is to show compassion to his people. To love, protect, provide…he owes them that.
Disillusionment: The lie of the enemy is that position is power.
I think that as the play progresses, King Lear becomes more sane than he ever was before, and reality completely destroys him. King Lear was living in happy oblivion (a place I like to hide). He gave to his daughters in return for superficial praise. He was happy with his riches, assuming that everybody was happy with him. When he is finally confronted with the poverty and pain in his country, he understands that though he is content, being king was never supposed to be about him and so he has failed entirely.
What has he done for his people?
What am I doing for those that I have been entrusted with? The more I am given, the less it is about me. My responsibility is to provide for His people. I am supposed to come last. Thats something I’m still working on.
“They dress the wounds of my people as though it were not serious. Peace, peace, they say when there is no peace.” Jeremiah 6:14
